How many people are excluded and isolated in Australia?

Recently updated, the Brotherhood of St Laurence's Social Exclusion Monitor, researched in collaboration with the Melbourne Institute, has found a noticeable increase in disadvantage since the beginning of the global financial crisis in 2008.

The monitor was developed to measure the extent and evolution of social exclusion in Australia.

In contrast to traditional one-dimensional poverty measures, such as income or consumption, the Brotherhood's social exclusion approach recognises the importance of many interrelated factors in determining how well – or not – people fully participate in society.
