Many hands make light work, so the saying goes, and today at the Brotherhood of St Laurence it couldn’t have been truer.
Members of our Coolibah Centre , a day centre for disadvantaged older people, got their hands dirty to help rejuvenate the garden that sits at the back of our head office in Fitzroy.
‘It’s an opportunity for the older members to help out and to learn new gardening skills,’ said Marica Cindric, manager of the Coolibah Centre. The garden, nestled between the office and the Brotherhood’s aged-care home
Sumner House , is enjoyed by staff and aged-care residents alike, providing both a green oasis and plenty of fresh vegetables. Residents of our
Independent Living Units – which also sit alongside the garden – make the most of the greenery as well, using it as a place of rest and reflection.
The funding for the garden rejuvenation came from the
Maggie Beer Foundation .
‘We are very grateful for their support,’ said Marica Cindric.
Kerry Reber and Janssen Rees, horticulturists with
Melbourne Total Landscaping , were on hand to assist the Coolibah members in the garden.
