Supporting transitions to employment for young jobseekers: a resource for program development in south-east Melbourne by Chisholm and Holmesglen TAFEs
This scan of academic and grey literature was commissioned to inform the design and delivery of vocational and workplace training for young unemployed people in south-east Melbourne.
The research shows that young people face a labour market markedly different from the one experienced by their parents, with manufacturing now declining while service sectors are growing. Also, employers increasingly call for ‘employability’ skills and relevant experience, as well as formal qualifications.
It finds that best practice includes a focus on relationships and capacity building, and strong links with employers who can provide meaningful work experience in areas that match young people’s aspirations and labour market needs.
The Brotherhood of St. Laurence undertook this literature scan on behalf of Holmesglen and Chisholm TAFEs, which received funding from the Victorian Government’s TAFE Back to Work Fund.
