BSL Talks - Engaging Multicultural Communities on the Voice Referendum

For nearly 90 years Indigenous Australians have been calling for a meaningful voice in decision–making processes that affect them.

Many different formats have been tried and failed. The most recent process involved a series of ‘dialogues’ that included thousands of Indigenous people across the country. The final document – the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart - represents a historic consensus that called for a First Nations Voice in the Australian Constitution and a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise a process of agreement-making and truth telling.

Through a national referendum to be held later this year, all Australians will have the opportunity to vote on whether or not they support the principles of having a First Nations Voice to Parliament. In this BSL Talks webinar, we look at how multicultural communities can get access to appropriate information and materials about the referendum, and why a YES Vote will be good for all of Australia.

Join BSL’s Senior Manager of Government Engagement Hutch Hussein in conversation with:

- Thomas Mayo, Author, Uluru Statement from the Heart signatory and PM’s Referendum Working Group Member
- Carlo Carli, Chair of the Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia (FECCA)
- Melissa Monteiro, CEO of the Community Migrant Resource Centre, Parramatta

There will also be time for questions from the audience during the webinar.
