Calling all booklovers!

Do you love books? Does the scent of ink and paper, the feel of flipping through pages, the stories and memories books evoke, make you happy?

Are you seeking a volunteering opportunity that allows you to be around books and people who share the same passion? Then we have the right role for you.

At Brotherhood Books we’re looking for volunteers from all backgrounds and levels of experience.

What we're looking for

Our volunteers cover a wide range of duties from sorting donations to ensure a consistent supply of stock, to uploading books on the website to provide our customers with a great selection of genres, and picking and dispatching orders to ensure fast and speedy delivery.

Depending on the needs of the store, and your interests, you might be involved in the following:

  • Sorting, selecting and cleaning donated books to ensure sufficient stock is listed daily on the website
  • Using the Brotherhood Books in-store guideline to ensure all books are sold at the best possible price
  • Uploading books on the website and creating short, appealing and accurate blurbs to help our customers with their book selection
  • Shelving books into appropriate categories. Picking and packing orders to ensure fast and speedy delivery
  • Processing stock both inbound and outbound and performing basic admin duties

We pride ourselves on being flexible, and we will always try to find a role that matches your skills and availability. No specific experience is required, just a desire to help out. We’ll ensure you have all the training, support and guidance you need to feel confident in your new role.

What’s more, you’ll also love our location. We’re close to the Melbourne CBD and easily accessible by car or public transport.

Why volunteer with Brotherhood Books?

Brotherhood Books is Australia’s first charity online bookstore, with a long tradition of selling second-hand books received from the kind donations of the public.

Our book room is a lively mixture of work and play and you’ll learn a lot about books. You’ll meet lovely people from all walks of life with incredibly humbling stories, make new friends and create meaningful connections. You’ll learn new skills that will boost your confidence, look great on your resume and help your career. Most importantly, you’ll experience a great sense of reward knowing that your help supports the most vulnerable members of our community with a brighter future. You’ll also help us continue to raise funds for the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) and its many life changing community programs, services and research it undertakes to address the fundamental causes of poverty in Australia.

The bookstore operates as a social enterprise, with its profits supporting the operations of the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL). BSL works with those in the community facing disadvantage, and advocates for lasting, systemic change to address poverty. By volunteering, you will be helping to raise funds for BSL’s many life changing community programs and services and help us achieve our vision of an Australia free of poverty.

If you can’t think of a better way to donate your time than spending it around books, we’d love to hear from you.
