Obeda’s story: A sliding doors moment that led to a job that cares

When Obeda moved from New Zealand to Victoria, uncertainty followed. With limited experience and no licenses, he was told construction might be his only option. His mother-in-law suggested visiting BSL’s Thrive Hub — and everything changed.

“I came in with no sense of direction,” he says. “Then we come here and there’s so much opportunity. Sitting down with the team unlocked something within me — confidence, motivation, hunger.”

With tailored guidance, interview preparation, and training, Obeda explored pathways and discovered his true passion: helping people. Within a month, he secured a role in a hospital environment in Frankston, gaining first aid and portering skills and momentum toward nursing. “Helping people is what I truly want to do,” he says. The Thrive Hub gave him belief and a plan, turning uncertainty into a career with purpose. Today, he feels proud supporting elderly patients and young children — and optimistic about the future for his family. One conversation opened the door; commitment carried him through.
