She has a PhD in Sociology and has wide experience in research into homelessness through her work at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne City Mission and Launch Housing. While much of her focus has been on youth, it has also encompassed research about young mothers, fathers and children experiencing homelessness.

Deborah recently completed an evaluation of Transitions to Work, a federally funded program to enable young people to pursue their employment goals. She is currently leading the developmental evaluation of the National Youth Employment Body (NYEB) .
