Zac and Paddy’s story: Companionship with three-and-four-legged friends at Clifton Hill Aged Care

Meet Paddy. He is a resident at our Clifton Hill Aged Care centre and is a proud Francophile. Paddy is rarely seen without his signature beret. He speaks a little French and greets most mornings with a cheerful “Bonjour.”

His first stop is always reception, where he visits and feeds his beloved bird, “Jaune” (French for yellow), who chirps away happily in the café area.

He also likes to spend time with “Murtle the turtle,” often pressing his nose to the glass as Murtle glides around her home. These small daily rituals bring great joy—not only to Paddy, but to fellow residents as well.

Another much-loved resident companion is Duke, a beautiful greyhound. Duke lives with Zac and rarely leaves his side, offering quiet comfort and companionship. He’s also a favourite among other residents, who enjoy stopping by for a pat when he’s lounging in the TV room.

Staff member Milly has noticed a remarkable change in Zac since Duke’s arrival:

It’s been wonderful to see Zac really open up. Having Duke has helped him engage with other residents in a way that just wasn’t possible before.

Media and communications student Alexandra recently visited BSL’s Clifton Hill Aged Care centre and spoke with Zac about having his dog, Duke, move in with him.

Other pets include Nina, the three-legged cat, and a few cherished fish. BSL’s Clifton Hill Aged Care is one of the first centers in Victoria to welcome these lovely three-and-four-legged animals that give love and companionship to our residents.
