Saying YES to the Voice
This week’s the launch of the YES campaign to support a First Nations’ Voice to Parliament, and the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) will be showing its support.
This week’s the launch of the YES campaign to support a First Nations’ Voice to Parliament, and the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) will be showing its support.
At BSL, we support Australia’s First Nations people in seeking a Voice to Parliament in the upcoming referendum, and a Makaratta Commission that will supervise a process of agreement-making and truth telling. It aligns with our values as a social justice organisation and our vision for an Australia free of poverty.
For nearly 90 years, Indigenous Australians have been calling for a voice in decision-making processes that affect them. When the referendum takes place, we can show our support by answering YES to one very simple question - Should we recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution with a Voice?
From this week’s YES campaign launch, we’re hoping for a positive result in the referendum as it will lead to a number of reforms and the ability to create change in areas such as healthcare, employment, justice and housing for all First Nations people.
