Settling in Australia
Arriving in Australia presents many challenges for refugees and migrants, from simple language barriers to discrimination. The Brotherhood aims to help new arrivals build their own communities as they make the transition into Australian society, through skills sharing, partnership brokering and training.
While most of our settlement services can be accessed through the Ecumenical Migration Centre, services for families are also offered at our Napier Street Child and Family Resource Centre and our Craigieburn Centre.
While the transition to a new country can present women with new opportunities, cultural barriers and limited access to services can affect their ability to work. Stepping Stones offers mentoring, training and support to help women develop new skills and increase their participation in business and the community.
It can be a challenge for many refugee communities to access the services they need within an unfamiliar system. The Refugee Action Program acts as a ‘broker’, connecting communities with service providers and resources to address their local issues and concerns.
