Youth Advocates Project

About the project

The Youth Advocates Project builds the capacity of young people to understand their rights and responsibilities as communications consumers. The Brotherhood runs the project in partnership with four schools that offer VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) in the Frankston–Mornington Peninsula Region. It is funded by the Australian Communications Consumer Advocacy Network (ACCAN).

It aims to:

  • empower young people as consumers, so that they are able to:
    • critically question what the telecommunications market is offering
    • make informed decisions regarding what are appropriate and affordable services
    • disseminate their research findings to other young people
  • empower young people to advocate for the availability of appropriate and affordable mobile phone services.

VCAL students will use youth peer research to develop recommendations that will be presented to ACCAN and the communications industry.

Who is eligible?

Young people undertaking VCAL programs at the four partner schools are eligible to take part in the project.

Features

Young people who participate in the project will have the opportunity to:

  • explore issues of financial literacy
  • develop consumer skills and knowledge
  • undertake a piece of pioneering research with their peers, where they will choose their own research questions, analyse the results and decide how they wish to disseminate the findings
  • advocate for youth-appropriate change in mobile communications, at a presentation day to peers and industry.
