School–Parent Education Engagement Program
About the program
The School–Parent Education Engagement Program (SPEEP) is a pilot project that works with families with children in the middle primary school years who may be at risk of disengaging from education.
The program employs and trains community-based bilingual School–Parent Educational Facilitators (SPEFs) to create stronger engagement and understanding between schools and families in order to improve children’s educational connection and achievement.
The project is based at the Napier Street Child and Family Resource Centre.
Who is eligible?
Families with middle primary school children living on the Atherton Gardens Housing Estate in Fitzroy who have English as a second language are eligible for SPEEP.
Features
SPEEP features:
- consultation with families regarding their needs in understanding the education system
- support for families to actively engage with their children’s school
- consultation with schools regarding their needs in understanding the communities of the children they teach
- assistance to schools in developing appropriate responses to the needs and barriers faced by the families identified
- facilitated engagement and mediation between the families and the schools
- work with families to develop independence and confidence in engaging with their children’s education
- events and activities to facilitate better engagement between schools and parents in the local community.
