Breaking Cycles by Building
Community Hubs

About the project
A coordinated approach to early childhood education can help children make smoother transitions through early years services and into school, and create stronger communities. This project develops community hubs where child and family services work together to make sure young children and their families receive the best possible support.
Breaking Cycles by Building Community Hubs is a Communities for Children initiative funded by the Australian Government under the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy. The project is run in two locations – Broadmeadows and Campbellfield. Each of these hubs has developed a local network of schools, kindergartens, maternal and child health services and other relevant family support services. This gives local families a central place where they can learn more about what is offered locally for them and their children under five.
The Brotherhood, together with other agencies, has documented the ‘hub’ experience of children and families living in the City of Hume in Melbourne’s north. Setting the hubs humming (2007) (PDF file, 531 KB) and Keeping the hubs humming (2009) (PDF file, 811 KB) are the reports from this work.
