Impact of an emissions trading scheme on low-income households

Putting a price on carbon pollution through carbon emissions trading is an important way to encourage society to reduce its use of carbon-based energy, such as petrol and energy generated by coal-fired power stations. However, because the financial impact of responses to climate change could fall disproportionately on disadvantaged people, the Brotherhood of St Laurence believes they must be accompanied by measures to protect the living standards of poorer households and help them reduce their carbon emissions.

Green jobs

Australia’s response to climate change could create hundreds of thousands of new ‘green collar’ jobs. We must ensure all Australians are able to take advantage of the opportunities this will create. New green jobs need to be supported through government measures and improved workforce training. The Brotherhood has found that community enterprises that give disadvantaged trainees work skills and experience in new, cleaner industries are an effective way to develop highly employable ‘green collar’ skills – and give disadvantaged people a stake in combating climate change.
