The Brotherhood of St Laurence has invited Professor Ruth Lister to deliver the 2010 Sambell Oration. Named after former Brotherhood of St Laurence Executive Director Archbishop Geoffrey Sambell, the event reflects his vision for social justice and provides a forum for leaders in our community to express their views.

Towards an inclusive society
The basis of an inclusive society is the right of all Australians to achieve full participation in the world of work. This can only be successfully achieved when the social infrastructure equitably supports both formal and informal caring roles.

What policy mix is needed to ensure good social citizenship is valued? And, with the increased demand for labour, what new models of care will be needed and how might they look?

Ruth Lister
Ruth Lister is Emeritus Professor in Social Policy at Loughborough University, UK.  She is a former Director of the Child Poverty Action Group and has sat on a number of commissions of enquiry including the Commission on Social Justice and the former government’s National Equality Panel. She has published widely in the areas of citizenship, gender, poverty and welfare reform.
