Urban Camp

About the camp

Our Urban Camp is a three- or four-day inner-city camp that allows secondary school students to discover the reasons for poverty and disadvantage first-hand.

The camp offers a mix of observation, discussion and practical experience to help students delve into the issues of social inequality, injustice and social exclusion. Students engage with Brotherhood clients and contribute to the welfare of disadvantaged people, both young and old.

Our camps have had a positive impact on students, expanding their knowledge and improving their wellbeing through appreciation of their own lives and the experience of helping others.

Who is eligible?

The camp is designed for secondary school students, particularly those in Years 9 and 10.

Features

At the camp students will:

  • observe affluence and poverty side by side on the streets of Fitzroy and Collingwood
  • gain practical experience in good nutrition and budgeting by purchasing ingredients and preparing and serving lunch to members of our Coolibah Centre
  • join in activities and help serve meals at our Breakfast Club
  • assist with literary classes in the local primary school
  • learn, through personal conversations, about issues related to refugees and asylum seekers who make their homes in Australia
  • where possible, attend a rehearsal of the Choir of Hope and Inspiration (formerly called the Choir of Hard Knocks)
  • reflect on their experiences by keeping a journal throughout their journey.
