African Australian Community Centre

About the AACC

The African Australian Community Centre (AACC) is a joint partnership between the Brotherhood of St Laurence and the Anglican Parish of Footscray. Its vision is to assist with successful and positive settlement outcomes for the African Australian community in Melbourne’s west, through developing:

  • a centre that can be run by and for the African community
  • activities based on community needs and views
  • increased individual and community capacity
  • leadership capacity of the parish and the community
  • an environment that is welcoming for young people.

The AACC will assist the African community to be empowered to grow in capacity and in time run this as an entirely community-led facility, to further engage specific target groups such as young people and to ensure that activities at the centre address community needs through a community development rather than a welfare model.

The newly refurbished site is being developed in a partnership between the Brotherhood, the parish and the community to house the AACC and other African community groups. As one of the two key centres leading the Brotherhood’s work in the area of refugees, immigration and multiculturalism (RIM), the AACC complements the work of the Ecumenical Migration Centre (EMC).
