Research proposals and ethics approval
Brotherhood of St Laurence researchers develop plans for new projects following agreed research proposal procedures (PDF file, 151 KB).
Each new research proposal is submitted on a research proposal form (PDF file, 34 KB), in conjunction with reading the Brotherhood's research ethics policy and completing the ethics checklist for submission with each new proposal research ethics policy and checklist (PDF file, 81 KB), including a completed research project costing sheet (PDF file, 76 KB).
All three documents need to be submitted via the PA to the General Manager, Research & Policy Centre: kphilipp@nullbsl.org.au as an e-copy or hard copy for approval by the relevant GM's prior to commencement of any Brotherhood research projects.
Research ethics
In developing a proposal, researchers are required to demonstrate that:
- the research will benefit people on low incomes
- participants are considered as partners in the research process
- the research will not harm participants
- people have the right not to participate, with no adverse consequences from that decision.
Our Human Research Ethics Committee is registered with the National Health and Medical Research Council and works to the council's National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans. The Ethics advisory committee meets twice each year, and external members include a lawyer, two lay people, a social worker, a research academic and an Indigenous Australian.
